One of the driver assistance systems that comes standard in the new Alfa Romeo Giulia & Alfa Romeo Stelvio lineups is traffic sign recognition. This feature uses a camera that's mounted to the windshield to detect certain road signs and shows them in the instrument cluster display.
Recognizable road signs such as Speed Limit, No Passing and many others will be displayed up to 2 at a time right behind the steering wheel and above the current speed that your Alfa Romeo is being driven. This will cause you to more easily know the laws of your surroundings, especially on a longer road trip where you’re not from the area.
As a result, you can prevent yourself from getting expensive and/or point-increasing traffic tickets. And in the case of some states, driving too fast can cause a reckless driving ticket that will stay on your record for years.
Traffic Sign Recognition: Things to Know
1. The system can be turned on or off by selecting the “Driver Assistance” menu in the onboard infotainment system & then the “Traffic Sign Recognition” option.
2. You can select the “Blinking” option and that will give you a warning when the speed limit is exceeded. A speed limit offset can also be chosen if you prefer.
3. A previously displayed speed limit sign will change color to indicate that it may no longer be valid if it’s a speed limit is no longer detected by the system.
4. The Alfa Romeo traffic sign recognition system may suggest an unregulated speed limit if the onboard camera does not detect one as you’re driving.
5. Keep the windshield free of debris including snow and mud to ensure the system can properly perform its intended function.
6. This driver assistance feature is not designed to replace safe driving habits, so please always remain alert and pay attention to the current traffic conditions as you are using the system.
