Two of the new advanced driver assistance systems that Alfa Romeo introduced with the latest model lineup are highway assist and traffic jam assist. And these features are designed to make your ride safer & more convenient.
That’s because you’ll get a semi-autonomous driving experience in the right circumstances. This means it’ll be like riding in a self-driving car, something unheard of just a few years ago. So let’s take a look at these amenities.
How Alfa Romeo Highway Assist Works
Coming standard in the Alfa Romeo Giulia & Stelvio models, highway assist helps to maintain your vehicle's positioning & speed when driving on roads like the NJ Turnpike, Garden State Parkway and Interstates 80 & 287. The system operates when lane markings are detected on the road at speeds of up to 90 mph.
To enjoy the highway assist system, your hands need to be on the steering wheel & adaptive cruise control must be enabled. Simply push the Highway Assist System button located on the left side of the steering wheel and the feature will activate after up to 5 seconds from being pressed.
When turned on, you'll be able to see a dedicated screen in the instrument cluster display behind the steering wheel. There, you can see any warnings (which can also be heard throughout your Alfa Romeo & felt in the steering wheel) and view the status of the system that's indicated by the symbol's color in the display.

We know driving can change in an instant, so you’re able to temporarily suspend the highway assist functionality by doing one of these tasks:
- Steering manually
- Pressing the brake pedal
- Activating the turn signals
- Shifting into park, reverse or neutral
- Disabling adaptive cruise control
- Activating cruise control by holding the adaptive cruise control button for 2 seconds
Just a warning, the system might deactivate automatically or provide limited capability if any of the following occur:
- You take your hands off of the steering wheel
- You make a lane change without signaling
- You unbuckle your seatbelt
- You enable forward collision warning & active braking occurs
- You're driving on a road with narrow bends or excessive curves
- The system doesn't detect any lane markings
- The vehicle exits off of the highway
- The navigation system is being recalculated or info is not available

How Alfa Romeo Traffic Jam Assist Works
Traffic jam assist works very similarly in the Alfa Romeo Stelvio & Giulia to highway assist, except it operates at speeds from 0 to 37 mph. It performs the same functionalities in terms of maintaining your lane positioning & how fast you’re going, except it still works if lane markings aren't detected by using the surrounding traffic to keep your vehicle centered.
